Vital Stats

Maroubra (da Bra to locals) is an incredibly diverse mix of people – Multi-millionaire sports stars and business people share the beach and waves with people from housing comm flats. Europeans, South Americans, Asians and Aboriginals live in and around Maroubra, some because their family has always been here, and some drawn by the iconic surf culture. What brings the community together is a love for the sea, the sunshine and the best surfing beach in Sydney.

Despite the ‘tough guy’ image in the media, the Maroubra surfing community is big on families, kids, sticking together and helping each other. We like that, and we do whatever we can to support solid marriages and raising healthy kids. The darker side of the culture is a bit a rebellious streak, which sometimes shows up as scorn for outsiders, including the police. The hardcore surfing culture brings with it some other stuff that damages people, like abuse of alcohol and drugs. Some nights the streets around Maroubra can be pretty nasty.

What We Do

We hang around the beach a lot – and the Zeebra café, and the Maroubra Bay hotel, and wherever else the local surfing culture hangs out. On the weekends we run programs for families with kids –Surf coaching classes for kids learning to ride a board, surf and brunch for kids and parents who can surf - beginners to expert. Sunday nights is a family gather called ‘Grom Church’ and Monday Nights is Big Bible Time at the Zeebra. In between we live our lives as part of the local surf culture, sharing life, surf and the good news of Jesus. We sometimes do safaris up and down the coast, and run the occasional contest.
